Andhra judge settles 260 cases in a day

Warangal: It was Judgement day in a very literal sense. And Judge Yesuratnam had every reason to have his cake and eat it too. This junior judge in Venkatagiri in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district settled 260 cases in a single day on Friday, creating a record.

"Even cases of 2008, 2009 and some cases of 2010 were disposed off," said a court official.

Judge Yesuratnam has a reputation for not keeping cases pending for long. In fact, since he joined this court four months back, he has settled nearly 600 cases. 157 of the cases on Friday were criminal cases, while 103 were civil disputes. This superfast judge handed out convictions to the accused in 13 cases and dismissed as many of 205 cases for want of evidence.

While critics may have reservations on the quality of judgement in a court where the judge is breaking all speed barriers, it would serve its purpose if it can inspire the judiciary to put on fast track the huge backlog of cases.

"Many people who have been making rounds of the court, be the victims, witnesses or accused, felt relieved," said Prasad, a police inspector.

Yesuratnam's feat in some ways comes as a welcome relief after seven of his colleagues from other courts shamed the fraternity by indulging in mass copying during an examination in Warangal in August.
