Andhra Pradesh: Immolation bid by lawyer

Hyderabad: The situation at the Andhra Pradesh High Court turned dramatic after a lawyer tried to set himself on fire. Other lawyers stopped him before he could do much damage though.

Lawyers from Telangana boycotted work at the courts for the third straight day today. Three lawyers are also on a hunger strike.

There have been clashes between the lawyers and the police as well.

The lawyers are demanding 42 per cent reservation in government posts in the courts. They also want the post of the state's advocate general to go to a person from Telangana. It's the third day of their protest today.

The government had constituted a three-member Cabinet Sub-Committee (with Geetha Reddy, M Venkatramana and Minister for Forests P Ramachandra Reddy as members) on August 23 to look into appointment of law officers. But that has not satisfied the agitating lawyers.

The lawyers allege that the government has failed to implement the gentleman's agreement of 1956 that promised 42 per cent representation to the people of Telangana.
