Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh today surpassed one lakh coronavirus cases each amid massive nationwide COVID-19 surge, which has taken the national tally past the 14 lakh-mark.

Karnataka, which had been praised weeks ago for containing the virus, on Monday reported its highest one-day tally of 5,324 cases, taking the total of those infected to 1,01,465. The state's capital, Bengaluru, reported 1,470 new cases in a day; its total stands at 46,943.
The total recoveries in the state shot up to 37,685 as 1,847 people were reported cured on Monday. The death count in Karnataka is 1,953, including 75 deaths reported today. Total active cases now stand at 61,819 cases, the government said in a statement.
"The first case of Novel Corona Virus infection, which has caused a pandemic resulting in catastrophic health implications and human miseries throughout the globe, was detected in the state on 08.03.2020. It was a case of international traveller returning to Bengaluru Urban. Since then the state has relied on 5Ts of tracing, testing, tracking, treatment and technology to tackle COVID-19. A robust surveillance system with elaborate contingency plan is in place for limiting the spread of the disease," the Karnataka government said in the press statement.
Andhra Pradesh, which had reported 7,627 COVID-19 cases on Sunday, took its total from 96,298 to 1,02,349 in a day, the health bulletin said.
The state's COVID-19 count doubled in just eight days, news agency PTI reported, adding it had crossed the 50,000-mark on July 20.
According to the latest bulletin, 49 fresh deaths were reported in the state, taking the coronavirus toll to 1,090. In the last 24 hours, a total of 3,234 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery.
The state now has 51,701 active cases after a total of 49,558 patients had recovered, the bulletin said.
India, the worst worst coronavirus-hit country in the world, on Monday reported nearly 50,000 cases in a day. With over 700 deaths in 24 hours, the country's death count stood at 32,771.
