Andhra Pradesh Rain: 24 Dead, Many Missing After Heavy Rain In Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh Rainfall: Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantpur districts have been affected.

Tirupati: 24 people have been reported dead and many others washed away in floods following incessant rains in Andhra Pradesh. Visuals from the temple town of Tirupati show hundreds of pilgrims trapped in massive floods.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy went on an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of the state on Saturday morning.
At least 24 people have died in the state and many are reported missing in floods that affected the Rayalaseema region of the state. Several districts have suffered extensive damage after rains brought in by two depressions that developed in the Bay of Bengal lead to torrential flooding.
Five people, including three children and an aged woman, died in the Kadiri town of Anantapur district after an old three-story building collapsed due to heavy rains late at night.
One of the worst affected places was the temple town of Tirupati in Chittoor district where huge amounts of water from upstream and from Tirumala Hills led to Swarnamukhi river going into spate, reservoirs getting full and flooding. Ghat road and walkways to Tirumala Hills have been closed. Seven people have died in the district due to flooding or electrocution. "We had anywhere between 12 cm to 19 cm rain on Thursday in several areas of Chittoor. But it was the cumulative effect of two depressions that brought in rains over the 10 days that led to the flooding. Reservoirs became full and the soil got hyper-saturated. Yes, this was unprecedented,'' Kanna Babu, special disaster commissioner for Andhra Pradesh, told NDTV.
Three state transport buses have been marooned,12 people stuck in them could not be rescued.
National and state disaster relief teams have been deployed to handle the situation and rescue operations are in full swing.
The floods have damaged the roads at many places and rail, road and air traffic have been hit. Kadapa airport will remain closed till November 25.
The Rayalaseema region is worst affected. Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, and Anantpur districts in the state have been affected.
Rains have not stopped since Thursday and the Cheyyuru river is overflowing. The Annamayya irrigation project has also been hit.
Rains have caused disruptions in Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well. In Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, the pilgrimage to Pamba and Sabarimala tomorrow has been prohibited because of rising water levels in the Pamba river.
