Train Accident Highlights: Railways sources said the tragedy was a result of human error.

14 people died and 50 were injured after a passenger train overshot the signal and hit another from behind on the Howrah-Chennai line in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, months after the horrific three-train collision in Odisha that killed over 280.

A special passenger train going from Visakhapatnam to Palasa had stopped on tracks between Alamanda and Kantakapalle near Kothsavatsala because of no signal when the Vizag-Raigad passenger train rammed it, derailing three coaches.

Railways sources said the tragedy was a result of human error, adding that signaling was not noticed by loco pilot.

Jagan Reddy Urges PM, Railway Minister To Inspect All Rail Lines In India

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to inspect all rail lines in the country.

The Chief Minister made the appeal following a visit to the Vizianagaram government general hospital where the injured survivors are undergoing treatment in the wake of a train accident in Vizianagaram district.

"I sincerely request Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to constitute a high level audit committee to thoroughly examine all these aspects, not just on this line but on all lines across the country," said Mr Reddy in a post on X.

Andhra Accident: Initial Probe Points Finger At Rayagada Passenger Train Crew

A preliminary railway probe into the Sunday night accident in Andhra Pradesh has held the driver and the assistant driver of Rayagada Passenger train responsible for the collision as it passed two defective auto signals violating norms. Both crew members were killed in the accident.

Signed by seven experts, the preliminary report said they carefully examined the accident site, available evidence, statements of officials concerned, data logger report and the speedometer chart.

It concluded that the Rayagada passenger train (08504) hit the Visakhapatnam Palasa passenger train (08532) from the rear due to the crew of the former passing two defective auto signals.

Andhra Chief Minister to visit train accident site today

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy will visit the train accident site at Kantakapalli in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district to take stock of the situation.

The Chief Minister is also scheduled to visit the injured persons in the train accident who are undergoing treatment in hospitals.

"The Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will visit the train accident area at Kantakapalli in Vizianagaram district today. The Chief Minister will also visit the injured persons who are undergoing treatment in the hospitals. Officials are making the arrangements," the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office tweeted.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that all injured people have been shifted to different hospitals for treatment and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for families of the deceased.

"All injured shifted to hospitals. Ex-gratia compensation disbursement started- Rs 10 Lakh in case of death, Rs 2 Lakh towards grievous and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries," Mr Vaishnaw posted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced financial assistance  of Rs 2 lakh from the PM's National Relief Fund for the family of deceased and Rs 50,000 for injured in Andhra Pradesh train accident, PMO Office informed.

"The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased due to the train derailment between Alamanda and Kantakapalle section. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," PMO Office posted on X.

Expressing shock over the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed officials to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured from the state.

He also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured from other states, according to an official release.
