Uttarkashi, Uttarkhand: A Polish mountaineer missing for the past few days was suspected to be dead in a deep gorge on way to the Shivlinga peak less than two days after another member of his team tottered and fell to his death during rescue operations, a Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) official said today.
The rescue teams had seen the body of Polish mountaineer named Grezegorz Michael Kukurowski in a 6,200 metre deep gorge on way to the peak, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering Inspector Darsan Singh Rawat said.
NIM is part of the rescue team engaged in efforts to retrieve the ailing Polish duo.
They were reported sick on way to the Himalayan peak on Tuesday.
However, the rescue team has not been able yet to reach the body of the dead mountaineer, he said adding efforts to recover his body will continue tomorrow.
Kukurowski's compatriot Lucasz was killed on Thursday evening as he fell to his death during rescue operations.
He slipped and fell to his death while trying to come down to make it easier for the rescuers to reach him, SP Dadan Pal said.
Both mountaineers from Poland were part of a five-member team from that country out since September 22 to conquer the 6,543 metres Himalayan peak of Shivlinga in Uttarkashi district.
