Another encounter in J&K; 2 militants killed
Pampore: Two militants who took shelter inside a house in Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir and fired at security forces, have been killed after an extended gun battle.

The two were identified as Altaf and Javed, both Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives. Altaf was involved in a car blast near the Central Jail and in the killing of a policeman in Pampore.

Security forces had been tipped off that two militants were hiding in the house in Pampore. As they laid siege, an encounter ensued.

This is the second encounter in the state in the last 48 hours.

On Thursday, two terrorists, allegedly also from the LeT were killed by security forces in Hotel Panjab in Srinagar's Lal Chowk.  This was Srinagar's worst terror attack since 2006. Nine people were injured in that encounter; two were killed in addition to the militants.  (In pics: Terrorists strike heart of Srinagar)

The two terrorists began their offensive on the street on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm.  Armed with AK47s, they walked through Lal Chowk and attacked a police vehicle. They then rushed into Hotel Punjab and turned the hotel's top floor into their base camp.

600 civilians were evacuated from the area. Security forces fought back for 22 hours. On Thursday morning, they entered the hotel and began searching rooms to find the militants.  One was shot dead inside the hotel, the other jumped out after getting caught in a blaze of his own explosives.  He injured a policeman before he was killed.
