Srinagar: Actor Anupam Kher was stopped at the Srinagar airport this morning by officials preventing him from visiting the NIT Srinagar campus, which has been tense since clashes between students and police this week.
The 61-year-old actor who has voiced concerns about the police action on students at the National Institute of Technology on Tuesday wanted to visit the campus. But officials cited orders banning the large gatherings to prevent Mr Kher from visiting the campus.
The NIT campus has been tense since policemen lathicharged student protesters on Tuesday evening after a clash at the institute's main gates. Last week clashes had also broken out among local students and those from outside over the former celebrating India's defeat in the World T20 semi-final match. Governments in Jammu and Kashmir have in the past as well prevented political leaders and activists from entering the state citing the prohibitory orders.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's government had sent back then Opposition leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj from the Jammu airport in 2011 to stop them from holding a rally.

Security forces have been stationed at the gates of the institute.
