New Delhi:
Army Chief General VK Singh kept an appointment with captains of industry today, but refused to comment on the twin storms he has generated this week that have engulfed the country.
"I have said whatever I had to say," General Singh told reporters after addressing the Fifth International Conference on Aerospace and Defence. At the event, he said 70 per cent of India's defence equipment is imported; he stressed the need to produce more arms and ammunition domestically.
On Monday, General Singh revealed in an interview that he had been offered a bribe of 14 crores in 2010, six months after he took office. In Tuesday, a confidential letter form him to the PM was leaked. It warned that India's Army is weakened by obsolete equipment. The General has described the leak as "treason"; the Defence Minister, AK Antony, has said it is "anti-national." The Intelligence Bureau has been assigned to identify the mole. Mr Antony has also rejected demands from within and outside his party to remove the Army Chief.
General Singh has been accused by critics and by various leaders of the opposition of seeking to embarrass the government - his alleged motive is his failed attempt in court to make the government accept he was born a year later than his records establish. If he had been successful, he would have been eligible for another year in office.
