Jammu: Indian Army Chief General Dalbir Singh arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday to review the security situation along the border and the Line of Control in the state following increasing ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
General Singh also met and complimented officers and soldiers who carried out the surgical strikes on Pakistani terror targets across the Line of Control or LoC on Wednesday. It is his first visit since the operation on Wednesday night.
The army chief, who is reviewing the situation and operational preparedness along western border, LoC and Kashmir Valley, held a three hour meeting with army cadre and corps.
His visit comes as Pakistani troops today targeted Indian posts and civilian areas with mortar bombs and heavy machine guns along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Akhnoor tehsil.
There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing, which started at 3:30 am and went on for over two hours. Indian troops guarding the border retaliated effectively, defence sources said.
This is the fifth violation of the 2004 ceasefire by Pakistani troops along LoC in the state in the past four days, Press Trust of India said.
Pakistan has stepped up cross-border firing after the India's surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir against terror launch pads or staging areas for Pakistani terrorists looking to infiltrate.
