Arrest warrant against relief camp organiser in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar: The Uttar Pradesh Police has issued arrest warrant against the organizer of a relief camp in Malakpur in Muzaffarnagar district where communal riots in September claimed over 60 lives and displaced more than 40,000 people.

Kanwar Hassan, a local Bahujan Samaj Party or BSP leader, has been booked for allegedly not allowing the camps to be closed down.

Curiously, Mr Hassan has been booked for sales tax violation. The metal factory that he reportedly owns has been sealed.

The case follows reports of thousands of people being evacuated from the relief camps despite severe cold and asked to return to their villages by the state government, even as rioters, 'wanted' by the police, roam free.

The Akhilesh Yadav government has also been accused of planning to drop cases against Muslim leaders indicted for inciting violence during the riots.

Reacting to NDTV's report, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said, "Asking for information about cases does not mean we are withdrawing cases."
