Even women were slapped while a camera of the group was broken, the activists alleged.
Members of a rights organisation founded by award-winning activist Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey were allegedly attacked on Saturday evening in Rajasthan's Jhalawar by BJP legislator Kanwar Lal Meena and his supporters while police stood by watching.
The group of activists were attacked in Aklera town of Jhalawar district which is in Chief Minister Vasundhara's Raje's son Dushyant Singh's Lok Sabha constituency, members of the Soochna Evam Rozgar Manch alleged.
The group, an off-shoot organisation of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan or MKKS founded by Magasaysay award-winner Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey, had started a drive last month to spread awareness about government accountability and had been travelling through various districts of Rajasthan.
Through puppet shows and songs, the campaign has been asking people about their problems and informing them about various mechanisms available to seek redress from the government, the group said.
The vehicles of the group were also vandalised by the mob.
The 'Jawabdehi Yatra' was also an exercise in making people aware of their rights and what is due to them under the government policies, they said.
Today, when the drive was in Aklera town, they were attacked by three people, the members of the group said. When the activists resisted, they were allegedly attacked by another mob of over 40 people led by the local BJP legislator Kanwar Lal Meena with sticks and stones.
The activists allege that even women were slapped and beaten while a camera of the group was broken.
"After around 10 minutes of songs and speeches, three men with lathis attacked us. One of them charged straight at Anurag screaming 'camera le lo'," one of the activists Radhika Ganesh said.
Activists part of the drive also alleged that the police deployed at the spot just stood as mute spectators and watched the sequence of events unfolding.
The BJP leader has denied the attack while the state government which is led by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has so far not commented on the incident.
