Pankaja Munde has already signaled she would not contest the Beed Lok Sabha constituency
Ahmednagar:
On the last day of her 3000-kilometre Sangharsh Yatra, BJP legislator Pankaja Munde made it clear that she has inherited the political legacy of her father.
The late Gopinath Munde was the "people's leader" in Maharashtra. And the people were not pleased that the party is not giving her a shot at the state's top job.
They had no qualms saying so, despite the presence of BJP President Amit Shah at the rally.
"We were expecting Amit Shah will announce her name as the chief minister candidate. We are angry he didn't," said one of the participants at the rally. "She is the daughter of the only lok neta Maharashtra had," fumed another.
The new kid on the state's political block, Ms Munde had moved in to fill the leadership vacuum of in the Vanjara community after the death of her father earlier this year. And the yatra was more of a signal that despite the death of her father, the family still wields considerable clout.
The yatra, in fact, was reminiscent of another such exercise conducted by Gopinath Munde in 1995, which had helped the BJP-Sena alliance come to power in Maharashtra for the first time.
At the rally she drummed up support for the party. "We all will fulfill the dream of Gopinathji to throw the corrupt Congress-NCP government out of power," said Ms Munde. And the response of the audience won the approval of Mr Shah.
"Today Pankaja is concluding her yatra and the BJP is starting its campaign to wrest power in Maharashtra," Mr Shah said.
Ms Munde, who represents the family turf Parli in Beed, has already signaled that she would not contest the Beed Lok Sabha constituency, which fell vacant after her father's death in June.
