As PM Modi Tears Into Political Families, This BJP Candidate Banks on Family Ties

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj campaigning for her sister Vandana Sharma in Haryana

Safidon, Haryana: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigns in Haryana against politics as family business, a candidate of his BJP is a debutant politician banking on a famous sister - Sushma Swaraj, India's foreign minister.

Vandana Sharma, 51, is contesting the October 15 assembly polls from Safidon constituency in Jind.

"She didn't get a ticket just because she is my sister. The party wanted to bring in educated, upstanding women candidates," Ms Swaraj said on Sunday as she introduced her sister, who matched her trademark jacket-and-sari style.

Campaigning for Vandana, who is 11 years younger, the minister promised jobs, social welfare and development if she won.

"Safidon will get everything it deserves, but Vandana can get more from me. She has been doing this since childhood, being my younger sister, she will campaign on the roads. She will stand by you during tough times," Ms Swaraj said.

Safidon gave the BJP an edge of 16,000 votes in the May national election, making it a safe seat for Ms Swaraj to launch her sister.

But the former college principal has been derided by some as a "parachute candidate" or an outsider.

Fighting that perception at a rally, she displays some of her charismatic sister's flair for oratory. "Given the tremendous support for me, those who said Vandana is bahari (an outsider) are now being forced to say she is bhari (heavy) on us," she says.

Ms Sharma's campaign relies heavily on the achievements of the Modi government, especially those of the foreign ministry led by Ms Swaraj, even if India's diplomatic victories mean little to the average voter in Haryana. "My sister is doing a really good job in Delhi. When Indians were caught in the Middle East, you all know how she got them back to India," she said at a rally.

For the first time, the BJP is contesting alone for polls to the 90-member Haryana assembly, after ending its alliance with the Haryana Janhit Congress.
