Kolkata: A parliamentarian of Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress party today allegedly slapped a traffic policeman in Kolkata. The policeman's allegation has been strongly denied by the MP, Mr Prasun Banerjee.
The traffic constable claimed that Mr Banerjee lost his temper at being stopped when his car was about to take a wrong u-turn at the Lake Town crossing on a road that has heavy traffic.
On being stopped, Mr Banerjee's driver started arguing with the policeman. The MP finally came out of the car and allegedly told the policeman that a parliamentarian should not be stopped.
When the policeman insisted that he should follow rules, the MP allegedly slapped him.
Mr Banerjee is the Trinamool MP from Howrah and a former national football captain. He told NDTV, "It is true there was an argument with the police constable and I may have spoken loudly to him but there is no question of slapping him."
The MP says he called a senior police officer and his car was allowed to pass. He added that he was told by other policemen at a nearby post that the constable had a nerve ailment.
This incident comes days after a man was charged with attempt to murder for slapping Trinamool MP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee at a public rally.
