Assam 's Karbi Anglong district continues to remain tense but calm. The bandh called for a separate state for the Karbi tribe, triggered by the Telangana announcement, ended today.
Curfew was relaxed again for four hours starting at 8 am. Traffic has begun to trickle back on to the streets and some shops have reopened.
On Saturday night, a mob ransacked and burnt down the office of Chief Engineer, Irrigation, close to Diphu town. The entire office and its records were destroyed.
Train services, hampered since the violence started, have been partially resumed at Diphu, the district headquarters of Karbi Anglong.
17 companies of paramilitary forces are currently deployed at Karbi Anglong with the army carrying out flag marches and patrols in the area.
In Diphu town, Elwin Teron, an adviser to the Hill State Democratic Party, one of the main political parties in the region, told NDTV that the violence could not be justified but it was spontaneous and may continue. Accoridng to Mr Teron, by announcing statehood for Telangana, the Centre has shown a lack of respect for regions like Karbi Anglong, where an agitation for statehood has existed for decades.
The 10,000 square km Karbi Anglong district, one of the largest and most backward in the country, is currently governed by an autonomous council under the sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution, which the protesters say is not enough.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday ruled out further division of his state saying people there want to live like a joint family.
