Assam floods: Three districts affected, evacuation alert sounded
Guwahati: Evacuation alert has been sounded in Assam, where three districts are now submerged affecting nearly one lakh people after the torrential rains caused River Brahmaputra and its tributaries to overflow.

Altogether three districts were now submerged, with Dhemaji district being worst-hit after getting inundated by the overflowing water of river Jiadhol following two days of rainfall in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. Chirang and Lakhimpur are the other two districts which are affected.

Authorities said several relief camps have been set-up, mostly in Dhemaji district.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to discuss the situation and extended the central help, official sources said.
