Guwahati:

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has "summoned" a Guwahati-based journalist for questioning in connection with a case against activist Akhil Gogoi over last year's protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA in Assam.

Manash Jyoti Baruah, a journalist who works with a website and before that with a Guwahati-based TV channel from the stable of a big media firm, was asked to come "over a phone call" to the NIA's regional headquarters at Sonapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati today.

The NIA has not officially responded to the claims of the journalist.

"I got as a call from NIA official DP Singh. He told me to come for questioning in the case against activist Akhil Gogoi. When I asked him for the official summons, Singh told me that due to the (coronavirus) lockdown they are unable to send the summons, but will give me the letter when I reach their office," Mr Manash told NDTV on Thursday.

Right to information (RTI) activist Bhaben Handique, who was an aide of Mr Gogoi, was questioned in connection with the case against the citizenship law activist on May 9.
