Dibrugarh: The murder of a post graduate medical student in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh has triggered major protests in the city.
The ICU's ward boy, Khiru Mech, has been arrested for the murder of 24-year-old Sarita Tashniwal, a first year obstetrics and gynaecology MD student, police said.
Junior doctors and students of the hospital have launched an indefinite strike in protest.
They have demanded more security, particularly for women, punishment for Dr Tashniwal's killer and installation of CCTV in the ICUs to prevent such incidents in the future.
They also demanded the resignation of the state health minister.
More protests over the incident are expected to be held today.
Dr Tashniwal's body was found on Friday morning on the bed of the doctor's resting room inside the ICU, police said. She had been stabbed on the left side of her neck with a surgical knife.
Sarita hails from Sivasagar district, located 470 km east of Guwahati.
She was about to get married on July 7 with Roshan Agarwal, a fellow doctor in the same hospital.
Speaking about the case, Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rana Bhuyan said, "The ward boy had tried to molest her first. He then attacked her as he feared being caught. We are investigating the matter further".
