The final Assam citizens' list - intended to identify legal residents and weed out illegal immigrants from the state- is out, leaving out 19 lakh people.
Names of 3.11 crore applicants were included in the final NRC, NRC State Coordinator's office said in a statement. The status of both inclusion and exclusion can be viewed online in the NRC website, www.nrcassam.nic.in.
"A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit their claims.Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeal before Foreigners Tribunals," Prateek Hajela,State Coordinator, NRC, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
In the first draft of the citizens' list, nearly 40 lakh people were left out. The number is down to 19 lakh in the final list.

"I was not expecting my name to be in the list as my case is still pending in the High Court, I have full faith in the judiciary and I'm confident that I will get justice," said Mohammad Sanaullah, a retired Indian Army soldier who was sent to a detention centre on charges of being a "foreigner" on May 29. The Gauhati High Court ordered his release on bail the next month, and sent notices to the state as well as the central government.
