Assam women proud to weave Tricolour

Assam women proud to weave Tricolour
Guwahati:

Around Independence Day, it's customary to see flags being sold across shops and even on the streets. NDTV travels to Guwahati to meet some of the women weavers who take great pride in weaving the flags even if it means little money.

The women have been working overtime to meet the demands. They look forward to the season not just for the extra income, but also seem to take pride in what they are doing.

"We look forward to this season. We earn Rs 3 to Rs 12 per flag depending on the size. We have to work overtime but we don't mind," said a weaver.

"We feel very proud weaving the Tricolour, which is used by the people. It's even sent outside the state," said another weaver.

Guwahati shops do brisk business selling the Tricolour. And one of the outlets has had a record sale.

"We have already sold around 40,000 flags," said the shop owner.

This is significant given the fact that Independence Day in Assam means the customary boycott call by banned militant groups. But that hasn't dampened the spirit of Independence.
