Assembly Election Results 2021: Mamata Banerjee on Sunday won a spectacular victory in Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee on Sunday won a spectacular victory in Bengal, defeating the BJP in elections in the middle of a raging pandemic. The Chief Minister, however, lost to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram. "I accept the verdict in Nandigram - it is not a big deal. Don't worry," she said.

The Election Commission has rejected the Trinamool Congress's appeal for a recount of votes at Nandigram, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had faced her aide-turned-arch rival Suvendu Adhikari.  The Returning Officer has said that the result will be officially declared after the VVPAT slips are tallied with the votes on the Electronic Voting Machines. After a day of yo-yo competition. the results on Sunday evening indicated that the Chief Minister had lost to Mr Adhikari by 1,736 votes in the contest that was the centrepiece of the assembly election in the state.

The BJP party office in Arambag was set ablaze on Sunday evening as the Trinamool Congress inched towards a huge victory in the assembly elections, reopening allegations of violence by the ruling party. The BJP leaders and workers tweeted the video, alleging that Trinamool has unleashed violence on their workers elsewhere as well.

AIADMK legislature meeting on May 7

A meeting of the newly elected AIADMK MLAs will be held here on May 7 under top leaders O Panneerselvam and K Palaniswami, the party said on Monday.

The meeting will be held at the party office here on Friday, a release said without elaborating.

The new MLAs might elect the Legislature Party Leader, paving the way for the person to become the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.

The AIADMK had lost the April 6 Assembly elections to arch-rival DMK, with its president M K Stalin all set to take over as Chief Minister, succeeding Palaniswami, after ten years in the opposition.

While the DMK won 133 seats in the 234-member House, AIADMK netted 66, with the rest being spread between the two parties' allies--Congress, Left, BJP and PMK among others.

BJP Likely To Send Central Observers To Assam To Pick Next State Chief Minister: Report

The BJP is likely to finalise its choice of chief ministerial nominee for Assam in a day or two as internal consultation within the party has begun amid a suspense over whether it will continue with incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal or bring in a new face.

Mr Sonowal and his powerful ministerial colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma are being seen as the two most obvious contenders for the top job.

BJP sources said internal confabulation is on in the party, and the its parliamentary board may soon name central observers to preside over the meeting of its newly-elected party MLAs in Guwahati where they will pick their leader.

Central observers generally convey the choice of the party top brass to the state leadership which in turn is endorsed by the MLAs.

The ruling BJP-led NDA has retained its grip on Assam, bagging 74 of the 126 assembly constituencies that went to polls, while the opposition Congress-led grand alliance managed to clinch just 50 seats.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami resigns, Governor accepts it; dissolves Assembly

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami tendered his resignation and that of his cabinet and Governor Banwarilal Purohit accepted it, the Raj Bhavan said here on Monday.

"The Governor of Tamil Nadu accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Thiru Edappadi K Palaniswami and his Council of Ministers, with effect from the afternoon of 3.5.2021," a Raj Bhavan release said.

However, Purohit requested him and the present Council of Ministers to continue until alternative arrangements are made, the release added. Also, the "governor has dissolved the 15th (2016-21) Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly."

DMK captured the reins of power in Tamil Nadu from the AIADMK by winning 133 of the total 234 constituencies in the Assembly polls. The AIADMK won 66 seats.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanks people for victory of BJP-led alliance

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked all sections of people for giving a clear mandate to the BJP-led alliance in the assembly election, results of which were declared on Sunday.

Expressing his gratitude to the people belonging to Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, and other parts of the state, the Chief Minister in a statement on Monday said, they had reposed their faith in the BJP-led alliance due to its performance in four key areas.

The areas were "development carried out by the BJP-led government which manifested in every nook and corner of the state, its unrelenting fight against corruption, initiatives to strengthen peace and harmony, and committed efforts of the government to safeguard the identity and existence of the Assamese people from the influx which had significantly altered the demography of the state, especially lower Assam", the statement said.

Mamata Banerjee to take oath as West Bengal Chief Minister for third term on May 5: Partha Chatterjee

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, whose party won 213 seats in the West Bengal assembly elections, will take oath as the Chief Minister for the third consecutive term on May 5, informed TMC leader Partha Chatterjee on Monday.

Briefing the mediapersons, TMC leader Partha Chatterjee said, "The TMC legislators have unanimously elected Mamata Banerjee as the leader. On May 5, she will take oath as the Chief Minister. On May 6, the oath-taking ceremony of the elected legislators will be held. We want Biman Banerjee to become the speaker of the Assembly. Meanwhile, Subrata Mukherjee has been made the protem speaker."

Asked about how can Mamata Banerjee become the chief minister despite losing Nandigram seat, the TMC leader said, "Matter still pending with Election Commission. The constitution provision is also there. There will be no hindrance ...no one can stop Mamata Banerjee to become the Chief Minister."

Victory due to Mamata Banerjee's magic: Trinamool Congress' film star contestants

Bengali film personalities who contested the assembly election on Trinamool Congress ticket attributed the stellar performance of the party to "Mamata magic", while those who were fielded by the BJP urged the ruling party to ensure that political rivals are not attacked.

TMCs winning Tollywood brigade includes director Raj Chakraborty, actors Kanchan Mallick, Soham Chakraborty, June Malliah, and Lovely Maitra.

Actors Papiya Adhikari, Rudranil Ghosh, Parno Mittra, Srabanti Chatterjee, Paayel Sarkar, Tanushree Chakraborty, and Yash Dasgupta of the BJP lost to the TMC.

Hiran Chatterjee, who was earlier with the TMCs youth wing before joining the saffron party this year won in Kharagpur Sadar against Pradip Sarkar of the TMC.

The TMC swept the assembly polls with 213 of the 292 seats, while the BJP bagged 77 seats.

11 women MLAs in Kerala Assembly; lone representative for UDF

For the first time since 2001, there will be double digit representation of women MLAs in the Kerala Assembly as 11 of them have been elected to the 140 member house in the April 6 polls.

A total of 103 women contested in the elections, but only 11 made it into the assembly, as per the Election Commission figures.

The number of women representatives in the Assembly was just eight in the 2016 elections. There were 13 women MLAs in Kerala in 1996,as per the figures. This time, there will be 10 ruling LDF women MLAs and a lone woman representative of the UDF opposition camp- the front-backed RMP leader KK Rema, who won from Vadakara in Kozhikode.

Mamata Banerjee to meet governor at 7 pm to stake claim to form government

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee will meet West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at 7 pm on Monday and stake claim to form the government, after her party's stupendous win in the assembly elections, Raj Bhavan sources said.

The ruling TMC has won 212 of the 292 seats where polling was held in eight phases in March and April, and is leading in one where counting is still in progress. The BJP emerged as the main opposition party with 77 seats under its belt.

It is for the second time in succession that Banerjee powered her party to two thirds majority in the state assembly.

The AIADMK, which tasted defeat at the hands of arch-rival DMK after a decade in office, on Monday said it bowed to the people's verdict and that it has greater responsibility to discharge as an opposition
party.

Expressing "heartfelt gratitude" to the people who voted for the party and its allies in the April 6 Assembly elections, the results of which were announced on Sunday, the party recalled its development initiatives.

"People are well aware of the work done by the AIADMK government towards development during the last ten years in Tamil Nadu. Ruling and opposition parties are the two sides of the coin of administration. We have the responsibility to function like the axle to the wheel of administration," party coordinator O Panneerselvam and co-coordinator K Palaniswami said on Monday.

AIADMK top leader and outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Monday greeted DMK president M K Stalin who is set to assume office as the next Chief Minister, with the latter acknowledging that the role of opposition was key in democracy.

"I convey my best wishes to Thiru M K Stalin who is going to assume office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu," Mr Palaniswami said on his twitter handle.

Thanking Mr Palaniswami, Mr Stalin said the AIADMK leader's "advice and cooperation" was required to make a better Tamil Nadu.

"Democracy is about ruling and opposition parties being together. Let us uphold such a democracy," Mr Stalin added.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulates Mamata Banerjee for landslide victory in assembly polls

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday congratulated Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for her party's resounding victory in the West Bengal assembly elections.

The TMC has secured an absolute majority in the House, winning 211 seats and leading in two more out of the 292 constituencies that went to polls.

"Chief Minister Sri Naveen Patnaik spoke to Mamata Banerjee over telephone this morning and congratulated her for the landslide victory of her party," a statement issued by the chief minister's office said.

MK Stalin to chair DMK MLAs meeting on Tuesday

The DMK on Monday announced convening a meeting of the party's newly elected MLAs on May 4, where party chief M K Stalin is likely to be elected their Legislature Party Leader.

The DMK chief, who led his party to a comfortable win against the ruling AIADMK after a ten-year stint in the opposition, is now set to take over as Chief Minister.

"The meeting of newly elected MLAs will be held under the leadership of party president Stalin at Kalaignar Arangam in Arivalayam (DMK headquarters) at 6  PM on May 4," its general secretary Duraimurugan said in a statement.

All the newly elected legislators have to attend the meeting without fail, he added.

Counting of votes polled in the April 6 assembly elections in the state, taken up on Sunday, was continuing Monday and the EC declared that DMK had won from 126 seats and was leading in another seven, giving it a comfortable strength of 133 in the 234-member House.
