Who will be the Congress's Chief Ministerial candidate for next month's Punjab elections - incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi or state unit boss Navjot Sidhu? The million-dollar question for the party may be answered in "one or two days" with chief Sonia Gandhi leading talks, sources have told NDTV.

The party has sought the opinion of members through its in-house 'Shakti' app and the consultations are now at a final stage, sources said, adding that at the moment, Mr Channi's odds were looking better and efforts were underway to bring Mr Sidhu and his camp "on board".

Amit Shah Knows I Won't Break Down: Akhilesh Yadav's Ally
Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary, who has stitched an alliance with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not aware of his loyalty and emotion and he will not change his mind.

Mr Chaudhary's remarks came as Union Minister Amit Shah during a meeting with Jat leaders in New Delhi had said the BJP's doors are always open for the RLD. Read here
Protests, Resignations In Manipur After BJP Names Election Candidates
BJP supporters burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and shouted slogans as protests erupted on Sunday after the party named candidates for next month's elections, leaving many disappointed.

Party offices were ransacked in various parts of the state and protesters gathered in several areas with placards. Security has been stepped up around the BJP headquarters in Imphal. Read here
Akhilesh Yadav Daydreaming, Can't Win Polls: UP Deputy Chief Minister
Downplaying Samajwadi Party's claims that it was going to form the government in Uttar Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday said its chief Akhilesh Yadav was daydreaming and that the BJP wave was evident.

"Just like 2017, the BJP will form the government in 2022. Lotus will bloom in all the nine Assembly constituencies of Bareilly and the BJP will win over 300 seats across the state to form the government," Mr Maurya told reporters at the BJP office in UP's Bareilly. Read here
Votes From Polarisation Politics Not Acceptable To BJP: Rajnath Singh
On the campaign trail in Uttar Pradesh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday hit out at the Samajwadi Party and said that BJP seeks votes on the basis of humanity and justice only.

Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi's jibe at Akhilesh Yadav-led party - "Red topi of SP spells red alert", Mr Singh said, "We do not want votes on the basis of caste, creed and religion. We seek votes only on the basis of justice and humanity." Read here

"She Only Coins Slogans": BJP's Aparna Yadav On Priyanka Gandhi's Flagship Campaign
BJP leader Aparna Yadav on Sunday took a swipe at the Congress party's "Ladki hoon, lad Sakti hoon slogan" in Uttar Pradesh and said that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra only coins slogans but doesn't do anything.

Addressing a press conference, Ms Yadav said that the party has not given a single ticket to women in Punjab state, while they are stressing on the women-empowerment slogan in Uttar Pradesh. Read here

The Congress has fielded a former mayor of Patiala - who was welcomed by Navjot Sidhu in the party recently- against Captain Amarinder Singh in the upcoming Punjab assembly election. Punjab's Channi To Contest From 2 Seats. "Told You," Says Arvind Kejriwal
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi will contest from Bhadaur constituency, the Congress announced today as it released its third list of eight candidates for Punjab Assembly elections.

The party had earlier announced Mr Channi's candidature from Chamkaur Sahib seat, a seat from where he is the sitting MLA and which he has been representing since 2007. Read here
BJP To Contest All 60 Seats In Manipur Polls, Announces Candidates' List
The BJP will contest all 60 seats in the Manipur assembly elections, the party said today, as it released a list of its candidates. At least 10 former Congress leaders among 16 MLAs who joined the BJP have got tickets in Manipur.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh will contest from his traditional seat in Heingang. Another key minister in Manipur, Biswajit Singh, will contest from Thongju seat. Former national footballer Somatai Saiza will contest from Ukhrul. Read here

Uttarakhand Polls: Chief Minister Dhami Holds Door-To-Door Campaign In Ganghet

Ahead of the Uttarakhand assembly election, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a door-to-door campaign at Ganghet in Jageshwar of Uttarakhand on Sunday.

After offering prayers at the Jageshwar Dham temple, Mr Dhami said, "Prayed to the Almighty for so that the election is done properly and the all the candidates get to contest the election. Sought his blessings so that we can form a BJP government in Uttarakhand once again."

On Thursday, Mr Dhami filed his candidature for the Assembly elections from the Khatima Assembly seat.

Polls to elect the 70-member Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held on February 14. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
UP Assembly polls: JP Nadda conducts door-to-door campaign in Shikohabad

BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda on Sunday conducted a door-to-door campaign in Uttar Pradesh's Shikohabad, ahead of Assembly elections in the state. Massive crowds had gathered to welcome him.

The BJP leader is also scheduled to conduct a similar campaign in Hathras later in the day and also address 'Prabhavi Matdaata Samwad' in Hathras.

Mr Nadda was been campaigning in Uttar Pradesh for the past few days. On Saturday he campaigned in Bareilly and on Friday in Shahjahanpur.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also been campaigning in poll-bound states. Mr Shah on Saturday held door-to-door campaigning in Muzaffarnagar in support of BJP candidates contesting the upcoming state Assembly polls.

Today, he will campaign in Goa.

UP polls: Legal proceedings initiated after RLD's Jewar candidate flouts model code, Covid norms
Legal proceedings have been initiated against Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Avtar Singh Bhadana, who has prima facie been found violating the model code of conduct for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and flouting COVID-19 norms in Jewar during an election campaign, police said.  

The police have taken note of purported videos that surfaced on social media to initiate action against Bhadana and have also informed the local election authorities, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Amit Kumar said.

In the video, Bhadana is purportedly seen with a large number of supporters as he went around Astauli village in Dankaur block of Jewar assembly constituency. The EC has banned physical rallies but permitted door-to-door campaign with a maximum 10 people with a candidate in view of the pandemic.

The video, stated to be shot on January 26, also purportedly showed currency notes being showered on the crowd of supporters during the campaign, which included a loud mobile-music system (DJ).

"In the video, Bhadana is seen campaigning with a crowd for the elections. Prima facie, it shows violation of model code of conduct and COVID-19 protocols. The in-charge of local Dankaur police station had reported the matter to the returning officer of Jewar on January 26 itself," DCP Kumar said.
UP Assembly Polls: Akhilesh Yadav To File Nomination From Karhal Tomorrow

Samajwadi Party (SP) National President and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who is contesting from the Karhal assembly seat of Mainpuri will reach the Collectorate office on Monday and file his nomination papers.

Other SP candidates will also file nominations along with Akhilesh Yadav tomorrow.

Yadav will contest the assembly elections for the first time from the Karhal assembly seat.

"Akhilesh Yadav will reach the Collectorate on January 31 and file his nomination papers. Preparations are almost done to file nominations of other three SP candidates with him," Rajendra Chaudhary Samajwadi Party Spox told ANI.

Party emphasised that the people of Karhal in Mainpuri wanted to be Yadav to contest the election from here.

"There will be a one-way election in the Karhal assembly and Akhilesh Yadav will win the election with huge votes margin," Rajendra Chaudhary told ANI.

Akhilesh Yadav will walk from Saifai by road and reach the district headquarters via Karhal for nomination. On the way, there is also a possibility of a huge public gathering for his first-time nomination in the assembly election.
