At Least 10 Killed As Assam Bus Falls Into Gorge In Meghalaya

The gorge the bus fell down in is about 100 metres deep, police said.

Itanagar: At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured today when a bus from Assam fell down a gorge in Meghalaya, police said.

Authorities fear the number of deaths may increase with some bodies yet to be recovered from the bus that was its way to Assam's remote Hailakandi district.

Among those killed are women and children as well.

The accident happened at Tongseng in East Jaintia Hills district, about 150 km east of Shillong early Tuesday, authorities said.

The gorge it fell down in is about 100 metres deep, police said.

"10 dead bodies have been brought out. We fear there might be more. The area is remote. The critically injured have been rushed to Silchar Medical College in Assam and the other injured are being treated in the local hospital in Khliehriat," a senior police officer in Meghalaya GHP Raju told NDTV.

The bus that left Guwahati for Hailakandi in Southern Assam last night was owned by a company called Capital Travels.

Many people take the 450 kilometre journey from Guwahati to Hailakandi, which passes through arduous terrain, overnight.

There have been a number of accidents on the route and several people have lost their lives over the last 20 years.
