Guwahati:
Police chiefs from across India and senior intelligence officials will discuss ways to deal with the increasing influence of terror outfits like the Islamic State and the Al Qaeda, at a high-level conference in Assam's Guwahati today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will also address the annual conference of directors general of police and inspectors general of police.
"Militancy connected with jihad across the country will be a major issue at the 49th annual conference, which is being held for the first time outside the national capital," Assam Director General of Police Khagen Sarma told media personnel.
The issue of young men from India reportedly being lured by the Islamic State, a militant group active in the middle-east, has come to the fore again after the arrest of Arif Majeed, one of the four young men from Mumbai who left their homes in May, reportedly to join the IS.
Assam has also witnessed a spike in militant activities recently. A powerful bomb weighing over seven kilograms was recovered from a train compartment in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district, while nine people were arrested from Barpeta, 90 kilometres away from Guwahati, for suspected links with the Bangaldeshi outfit Jamat-ul Mujhadeen.
Other issues to be discussed at the seminar include left-wing militancy, modernisation of police, illegal arms trade and human trafficking, said Mr Sarma.
