New Delhi: The attack by a group of men in a South Delhi market fatally injured Nido Tania, the young student from Arunachal Pradesh, whose murder has led to a national debate on discrimination against Indians from the North East.
A post-mortem report that will be submitted by the Delhi Police in court today confirms that the 20-year-old died as a result of injuries to his brain and lungs.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal joined protestors demanding justice for him at candlelight vigils last week.
Nido was beaten with iron rods and sticks after a fight with a shopkeeper and other men in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar market. Nido's friends and family say the men shouted racial slurs at him and made fun of his dyed blonde hair.
Nido then broke a glass counter in retaliation, and a full-scale fight erupted.
The police allegedly negotiated a settlement and Nido returned to his sister's home in Delhi, where he was found dead in his bed the next morning.
Three people have been arrested, including the shopkeeper; they will now be charged with murder.
Politicians across parties have condemned his death and vowed to work with activists and students from the North East to address their recurring concerns of being racially targeted in Delhi and other cities.
