New Delhi: Under severe criticism for the attack on a young Swiss couple as well as the current state of law and order, a senior Uttar Pradesh police officer has come up an unusual request. He asked people on Twitter to send 'get well soon' wishes for the Swiss couple.
The couple was chased by a group of men and attacked with sticks and stones in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra last week. Witnesses took videos of the couple on their mobile phones as they lay on the ground. Five people, including three underage boys, have been arrested, say the police.
Rahul Srivastav, PRO to the DGP, who is quite active on social media, and often shares inspiring stories and highlights commendable work by the police forces, had updated Tweeple about the arrests of the accused and "swift action by @agrapolice in the unfortunate incident of attack on #Swiss nationals".
While many users extended their wishes for the injured couple, there were others who questioned about measures taken by the UP police to ensure safety of the tourists and why it's not their job to send get well soon messages when they should actually be maintaining peace in the state. He was also asked if the UP police was aware that "harassment at these sites is commonplace".
The duo had arrived in Agra on September 30 from Lausanne in Switzerland. On Sunday, the group had followed them for an hour, shouted comments, blocked their way and forcibly took selfies with Ms Droxz.
The incident also drew criticism from the opposition which demanded action beyond the formation of teams. Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, referring to the anti-Romeo squads or police teams set up by the government to check harassment, questioned: "What happened to anti-Romeo squads? A couple visiting Fatehpur Sikri were beaten when they tried to click a selfie."
