Badaun: Samajwadi Party leader and Badaun Member of Parliament Dharmendra Yadav, who met the family members of the two girls who were raped and killed in Katra village in the district, faced some tough questions from them.
The father of one of the girls asked Mr Yadav, "Why am I asked about my caste when I go to the police? Am I not a citizen?" ('I Don't Need Compensation, I Want Justice,' Says Father)
Mr Yadav assured him, "We have taken his job, don't worry", adding, "Your request for a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe has been forwarded by the Chief Minister (Akhilesh Yadav). A fast track inquiry will be conducted". (Mayawati Targets Samajwadi Party Government)
The family of the two girls had demanded a CBI probe into the incident, saying they had no faith in local police.
Security arrangements have been made for the girls' family, said Mr Yadav.
Later, while reacting to allegations of policemen inquiring about the caste of the girls' family members, Mr Yadav told NDTV, "We have dismissed the policemen involved. (This case) Does not mean that everyone is the same". (Badaun Sisters' Gang-Rape: Rahul Gandhi Meets Family)
He added that the state government will "ensure justice", adding, "The demands of the family have been met and we have done our bit".
The two girls had gone missing on the night of May 27. Their bodies were found hanging from a tree the next day. (Why No Toilets at Home Puts Women at Risk)
When they approached the local police for help, they allegedly refused to register a first information report for hours. A case was reportedly registered only after angry villagers protested against the alleged police apathy. (Is Safety a Distant Dream for India's Daughters?)
All five accused who had been identified are now under arrest. Two are yet to be identified.
Two of the arrested accused are policemen who allegedly did not act soon enough on the complaint of the girls' family.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also announced compensation of Rs five lakh for the family.
The father of one of the two girls had yesterday lashed out at the government's offer of compensation, saying, "I don't need compensation, I want justice for my daughter".
