Bail for 4 cops in Shopian double murder case

Srinagar: The J&K High Court has granted bail to four policemen arrested for their alleged involvement in the Shopian rape and murder case.

Former Shopian SP Javed Iqbal Mattoo, deputy SP Rohit Basgotra, SHO Shafiq Ahmed and SI Gazi Karim were all arrested on July 15 for destroying evidence in the rape and murder of two women.

The bodies of the two young women, Neelofar Jan, 22, and Asiya Jan, 17, were found by the side of a stream near Shopian town on May 30 this year. The valley erupted in protest and the state government and police were accused of hiding facts.

The J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday promised the people of Shopian that he would leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book. On Thursday, the state government handed over the Shopian rape and murder case to the CBI. The case was being handles so far by the special investigation team (SIT) of the police.
