Banda rape: Politics takes over

Lucknow: A political tug-of-war has started in Banda over who has the right to get justice for the minor girl who was allegedly raped by BSP MLA Purushottam Dwivedi.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) tried to take away with the girl saying they will take her to some place safer. The BJP then joined the fray when party leader Smriti Irani tried to take the girl with her but the police stopped her.

"Now when the media will shy away from this particular headline, our biggest apprehension is that that is when people will start pressurising the girl, that is when they will start ensuring that the system fails to deliver justice. So we are here today to support not only the girl and not only the family but also to ensure that those who have worked against the system get punished," she said.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Rita Bahuguna has slammed Chief Minister Mayawati, accusing BSP of having criminals as politicians.

"I think the government is scared of taking action against the police officials there because all the thanas and all the policemen are hand-in-glove with the criminal elements within the BSP. The state government fears that if they take action against these cops, facts will come out," she said.

After spending over a month behind bars, the young girl from Banda, who was allegedly raped by a BSP MLA, who then had her jailed on false charges of theft, was finally out of prison on Sunday. (Read: Banda rape victim finally released from jail, gets security)

She is now being provided security after the MLA said he would seek revenge.

This comes hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati ordered her release and asked the Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary to provide security to her. (Read: I want BSP MLA to be hanged, says Banda rape victim)

After drawing flak from critics on her birthday for inaction in the Banda teen rape case, Mayawati also said she will constitute a fast-track court to get justice for the minor girl.
