Bandh for Gorkhaland called off on BJP assurance

Darjeeling: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has called off its bandh from 6 pm today. It had called for a four-day bandh in Darjeeling this morning.

The Gorkha group, which is spearheading a renewed agitation for a separate state of Gorkhaland, called off the strike after some senior leaders met the BJP leadership in Delhi.  The BJP leaders assured them they would take up the Gorkhaland issue, but asked them to call off the bandh.

The bandh had been called in the three hill subdivisions of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong and came just days after the Centre announced that it would initiate the process for the formation of a separate Telangana state.
