In Gujarat, a bandh is being observed in Surat city to protest against the alleged gangrape of a teenaged girl.
Though the trade organisations and citizen groups, which had earlier given the bandh call, have now withdrawn the call following the removal of the police commissioner, Sangh constituents like the VHP continue to back the bandh call.
Security has been beefed up with the deployment of State Reserve Police (SRP). Six companies of the SRP and 500 home guards have been deployed in various sensitive areas of the city.
"With regard to the shutdown call we have called in additional force to handle incidents of violence," said Assistant Commissioner of Police B M Chauhan.
He said the personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas like Salabatpura, Chok, Rander and Limbayat. Patrolling in these areas has also been increased, Chauhan added.
A team of the NCW is expected to meet the victim and the family later on Monday. (With PTI inputs)
