Bapu's heritage stuck in red tape

Chennai: As the news of auction of Mahatma Gandhi's items spread in India, everyone's message on the was loud and clear that they should be back in India. And liquor baron Vijay Mallya made that successful bid to bring them home.

Though Vijay Mallya, the new owner of the Mahatma's belongings says he wants to donate them to the Indian government, neither the government nor the liquor baron is sure when that will happen.

The auction of Gandhi's belongings made headlines around the world and put intense pressure on the government to react.

Five years ago, Mallya bought Tipu Sultan's sword at an auction in London for Rs 1.5 crore. Today it lies at a godown in San Francisco in need of heavy import duties for return. So will Gandhi's items meet a similar fate?

",I am sure the government would do its best to bring them back at the earliest, within the parameters of law,", Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said.

Till that happens, those curious to catch a glimpse of the Mahatma's auctioned belongings will have to wait.
