Beed: Maharashtra Health Minister, in a meeting with Marathwada officials, has decided that the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Detection Act will be strictly enforced to curb incidents of foeticide in the state.

Thirty two sonography centres have been shut down in Beed. This followed the shocking discovery of foetuses in a drain in the district earlier this month. (Read: Foetuses found in a drain in Maharashtra's Beed)

The Minister has promised strict action and said that in whichever district the law is broken, the Collector and Civil Surgeon of that region will be suspended.

"We have made it very clear in the meeting that district officials who let such malpractices be carried on in their areas will be suspended. We will not tolerate such malpractices to be carried on; we will take strict action," said Maharashtra Health Minister Suresh Shetty,

The discoveries come amid concerns that Beed district has 801 girls per 1000 boys while the state's average stands at 883 girls per 1000 boys which is also lower than the national average.
