Bengal train derailment: Mahato remanded to 10 days CBI custody

Kolkata: PCPA-backed Maoist leader Bapi Mahato, who is the main accused in Jnaneshwari train attack case of West Bengal, was given 10 days Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody by Jhargram court today.

Bapi Mahto was flown in a helicopter from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand to Midnapore in West Bengal and grilled by the CBI and the state police.

Mahato, one of three main accused in the derailment of the Jnaneshwari Express, which claimed over 140 lives,



was brought to Midnapore a day after he was arrested from a guest house in Jamshedpur. Mahato is facing charges for maliciously wrecking a train and destruction of railway property as well as murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.

The CBI had announced a reward of one lakh rupees for information on Bapi Mahato and two others who are still absconding.

22-year-old Mahato, a member of the Maoist backed PCPA and a resident of Rasua village in West Midnapore, is believed to have masterminded the derailment of the Jnaneshwari Express on May 28.

He led a group of 10 to 12 persons to the accident site late on May 27 and oversaw the removal of clips that attach the tracks to the sleepers. That caused the train to derail.

During his interrogation over the last 24 hours, Mahato is believed to have named several co-conspirators in the Jnaneshwari derailment, including some Maoist leaders. Earlier, the CPI-Maoist had denied any role in the train disaster.
