A 'conversion' ceremony in Agra.
Agra:
A team of Uttar Pradesh State Minorities Commission which was in Agra to look into the recent conversion of 57 Muslim families to Hinduism by right wing groups has concluded that it was in fact a 'betrayal and not conversion'.
"It was a betrayal and not religious conversion. Elder brothers stabbed younger brothers in the back. But other Hindus are helping these Muslims against people who are trying to create a divide between two brothers," said Shafi Azmi, member of the UP Minorities Commission.
The team concluded this after meeting the affected families in Agra's Vednagar to enquire about the controversial event which has sparked off a raging debate and also stalled Parliament for many days.
An FIR or police complaint was filed on the complaint of a villager who has alleged that 57 Muslim families chosen from a rag-pickers' colony in the Taj Mahal town were given inducements to convert.
"We were told we will get ration card, Aadhar card, the police will not bother us. We are poor so what do we do?" one of the converts had claimed.
Meanwhile, the commission is likely to submit a final report to the state government in a few days.
