Bhopal panel to study toxic clean-up

New Delhi: After spending two days huddled in meetings over legal and health aspects of the Bhopal tragedy, the Group of Ministers (GoM) is likely to assess the environmental damage caused by the tragedy.

With Dow Chemicals saying it bought over Carbide but not its liability, the panel will also decide who should pay for the clean-up of the gas leak site in Bhopal. Tonnes of toxic waste still lie at the site of the tragedy.

On Sunday, the focus is likely to be on adverse effects of the tragedy on locals - whether the leak contaminated ground water. If yes, to what extent and also what level of toxicity still exists at the site.

Till now there has been scant data and that has prevented proper long term action being taken.
