'Big B? No. I'm Smaller Than You,' Amitabh Bachchan Tells Schoolgirl

Amitabh Bachchan today interacts with school going girls at NDA gala at Delhi's India Gate.

New Delhi: Actor Amitabh Bachchan faced quite a poser on Saturday while interacting with a group of school children during the NDA gala at Delhi's India Gate.

"I want to know about your childhood. How did you become the Big B?" asked a seventh-grader, who introduced herself as Sugam. But Mr Bachchan, who had just hosted a segment on the government's "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" programme, was unfazed.

"Who says I'm Big B? Here, look, I am smaller than you," Mr Bachchan replied promptly, sitting down on the floor.

As her friends burst out laughing, Mr Bachchan said, "Big B is just a name people in the media have given me. No one is Big. One just has to do one's job and work hard to reach one's goals." In this context, he also quoted a few lines from "Madhushala", the famous work by his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan.

During the interaction with the children, Mr Bachchan also read two poems written by students.

"The real motive of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme is that there should not be any differentiation made between men and women," he said. "The most important part of our tradition is that women have been given a spiritual place. Even in our religion, women have been given a major position."

The show -- "Ek Nayi Subah (A new morning)" - is meant to celebrate the NDA government's second anniversary.

The five-hour programme will showcase the achievements of the Narendra Modi government over the last two years, during which cabinet ministers are participating in panel discussions to explain the progress they have made.

Several other actors from Bollywood are participating in the programme and are expected to speak about the government projects they are associated with.
