Begusarai, Bihar:
Close on the heels of the train collision in Sainthia in West Bengal earlier this week, another accident was averted in Bihar's Begusarai district.
Luckily, the driver of the Mahananda Express and station officials realised in time that a goods train was already standing on the platform the Express was about to enter.
The train was then shunted back and given an adjacent platform.
"There was a goods train already on the platform. Since we were approaching slowly to stop, it wouldn't have been a serious incident. But yes, an incident was avoided nonetheless," said Kaushal Kumar Yadav, the driver of Mahananda Express.
But what is more worrying is why Mahananda Express was cleared in the first place to enter the platform.
Monday's accident, which killed close to 60 people, was caused by a speeding train, the Uttarbanga Express, which rear ended the Vananchal Express as it was pulling out of the Sainthia station, 190 km from Howrah. In this case too, it was not clear why the two trains were on the same line.
