Bihar Assembly Trust Vote: 131 legislators voted in favour of Nitish Kumar, 108 voted against him

Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has sailed through the trust vote in the 243-member Bihar Assembly with 131 legislators voting for him. Mr Kumar was sworn in as the chief minister on Thursday, after he joined hands with former estranged ally, the Bharatiya Janta Party, after 4 years. In the 243-member assembly, JD (U) has 71 legislators, the BJP - 53. BJP allies have 5 seats - Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP has 2 seats,  RLSP (2) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) has 1. In an unexpected move, Nitish Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister on Wednesday after Lalu Yadav claimed his son Tejashwi Yadav will not step down from the post of the Deputy Chief Minister despite being named in a corruption case.

Pakistan Celebrating Nitish Kumar Victory: Shiv Sena
In a dig at the BJP over recent developments in Bihar, the Shiv Sena today said it seemed its ally had "made Pakistan happy" by aligning with Nitish Kumar.

The Sena said in an editorial that politics today was "no longer about morals and ideals" and added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah had "snatched away" the opposition's prime ministerial face.

'Had Tejashwi Resigned, I Wouldn't Be Here': Sushil Modi's Mock Thank You
During acrimonious speeches in the Bihar assembly today ahead of Nitish Kumar's trust vote, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi thanked Lalu Yadav's RJD and the Congress, now in the opposition. It stumped many for a moment, until he completed his thought.

"I would like to thank Congress and RJD. If Tejashwi had resigned I would not have been here," said Mr Modi, who was yesterday sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister, a post previously held by Lalu Yadav's son.

Tejashwi Yadav's refusal to quit as number 2 in the state government despite corruption charges precipitated the end of the two-year ruling coalition as Nitish Kumar resigned on Wednesday, dumping Lalu Yadav's RJD and the Congress. He was sworn in again 14 hours later, this time with the BJP back by his side.

Our alliance will take Bihar to new heights, says Sushil Modi after trust vote
  • An unnatural alliance died naturally
  • Congress claims of our people being with them has been proven false
  • If there was a secret voting RJD would have broken up, more than a dozen RJD MLAs would have voted for us
  • Happy that government led by Nitish Kumar has won vote of confidence
  • If Nitish Kumar proves his majority what is the need to invite the largest party
  • We claimed 131 legislators backing us, we got 131
  • We will sit down soon to discuss about the cabinet
  • Our alliance will take Bihar to new heights
  • The RJD wasn't in a position to explain charges against them
  • They didn't say one word against corruption in the assembly today
  • I am happy Nitish took the step at the right time
