New Delhi: A young woman from Bihar travelled to Delhi to sell a kidney so she could marry her boyfriend.

The 21-year-old, who is divorced, had followed the man to Uttar Pradesh hoping that he would marry her. He said he would, but if she gave him Rs 1.8 lakh.

So she decided to sell one of her kidneys. When she reached a government hospital in Delhi, doctors called the 181 helpline number for women and informed the police, suspecting that she was involved in the illegal kidney trade.

A team of the Delhi Commission for Women reached the hospital and heard her story.

The woman told the team that she used to live with her parents in Bihar after her divorce and got close to a neighbour, who soon left for Moradabad in UP.

Her parents were strongly against the relationship, she said, so she left home and went to UP to try and marry the man.

When the man asked her for money, she decided to go to Delhi to sell a kidney.

A member of the women's commission advised her to report her so-called boyfriend to the police but she refused.

She went back to Bihar with her parents, who had been called to Delhi.

The woman's case has been forwarded to the Bihar Women Commission, which has been asked to persuade her to take criminal action against the man.
