The BJP's losses are mounting. The alliance with Chautala failed the Lok Sabha poll trial in Haryana. The alliance couldn't win even one seat. So, ahead of the Assembly polls the BJP decided to walk alone.
"Basically we have discussed the results of Lok Sabha elections and after that the state unit is of the opinion that we will contest in a better way ourselves, BJP wants to contest most of the seats," said Vijay Goel, senior BJP leader and In Charge Haryana.
For the BJP, Haryana is another Orissa where it's now without a partner. The end of its tie up promises a three-cornered contest in Haryana which will benefit the Congress.
Still the BJP decided to snap ties as its state unit has assessed that:
- Chautala and his sons have a negative image
- Graft charges against them will become an embarrassment for the BJP
But the party is blaming seat sharing discord for it.
"Seeto Par Sahmati Na Hone Ki Wajah Se Toota Gathbandhan," said Rajnath Singh, BJP president.
But earlier on Monday morning around 10 am, Chautala's party had no idea that the alliance was off or that's what they told NDTV.
"There is no difference between the INLD and the BJP. We don't know of any such thing," said Ajay Chautala, INLD leader.
The Haryana unit of the BJP claims it was tired of playing the second fiddle but this means the party's call at the recent Chintan Baithak to expand the NDA has suffered a setback.
One more wicket down for NDA, from 24 to eight parties, BJP is desperately looking for fresh alliances but its leaders say Chautala's company was more of a liability than a asset for them at the national scene.
