New Delhi: A three-member team setup by BJP President Amit Shah will visit West Bengal's Malda district where mob violence erupted last Sunday following alleged blasphemous comments by a right-wing leader in Uttar Pradesh.

The team will be headed by party national general secretary and Member of Parliament Bhupender Yadav, a party release said today.

BJP lawmakers S S Ahluwalia and B D Ram, who is a retired director general of Police, will be the two other members of the team, it said.

The team will submit its report to Mr Shah after visiting the violence-hit area, the release said.

The Home Ministry has asked Ms Banerjee's government to submit a report on the violence. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, may visit Malda and Kaliachak on January 18.

On January 3, over one lakh Muslim protesters took out a procession at Malda's Kaliachak town against a hate speech by a right-wing leader in Uttar Pradesh in December.

The Rapid Action Force had to be deployed after violence broke out in Malda's Kaliachak town.

The demonstrators then went on a rampage, setting a police station and several vehicles on fire. One person sustained a bullet injury.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said the violence was not communal incident but a clash between local people and the Border Security Force or BSF.

"That's different. It was a BSF versus people struggle. State was not involved. It was not a communal programme," she said.

The BSF declined to comment on the remarks.

According to police sources, the demonstrations had spiralled out of control after a BSF vehicle got stuck in the traffic jam caused by the procession and an altercation flared between the protesters and BSF personnel.

Some sources also suggest the Kaliachak police station was targeted to burn down crime records. With Assembly elections just months away, the police is expected to begin a crackdown on people with criminal records.

The BJP has accused Ms Banerjee's Trinamool Congress of protecting those behind Sunday's violence.
