Concerned over the growing menace of drugs, a BJP member in the Lok Sabha today made a strong pitch for capital punishment for those involved in the illegal trade.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Nishikant Dubey said exemplary punishment is needed to strictly curb the drug menace.
The "weak" NDPS Act needs to be amended to provide for capital punishment to those who are involved in the trade, he said.
Mr Dubey made a strong plea for urgent attempts to curb the drug menace citing a report which spoke of growing proliferation among youth. India's case is much worse than even the US, he claimed.
The BJP member, who got instant support from several of his party colleagues, said his party is not against the ban on liquor imposed in Bihar but is concerned about the fact that there are no adequate laws to deal with narcotic substances.
He said people in such a situation turn to cannabis and other narcotic substances as also some cough syrups and certain tablets whose use has not been regulated.
