A BJP lawmaker's house in Arunachal Pradesh was vandalised by his supporters on Sunday night after he said he won't contest the assembly polls next month, police said.

Over 3,000 supporters gathered at the house of Likha Saaya, member of legislative assembly from Yachuli, on Sunday night for a meeting in Nirjuli town on the outskirts of state capital Itanagar.

The meeting turned violent when the supporters, angry over Mr Saaya's refusal to contest the polls, started throwing stones at the house, broke window glasses and set the chairs ablaze, Superintendent Of Police- Capital Tume Amo said.

Some of the supporters, carrying knives, entered the lawmaker's bedroom and damaged television, furniture, and doors, police said.

The situation was brought under control when police reached the spot. A case has been filed in the Nirjuli Police station.

In Arunachal Pradesh, polling will take place on April 11 in two parliamentary seats and 60 assembly seats.
