Kolkata: BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra hoped a political solution will soon be arrived at for smooth passage of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill in the Parliament.

Expressing hopes that the bill would be passed in the Budget session, Mr Mitra today said it was not correct for his party to oppose the GST when it was introduced by the UPA government in 2011.

"The senior BJP leadership is in touch with Congress over the GST Bill. The bill is likely to be passed in the Budget session which may be preponed," Mr Mitra said at an interactive session with MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He termed the GST a "big ticket reform" necessary to boost the economy and said, "It's is blocked by politics not by economics."

Mr Mitra said opposing just for the sake of opposition is not good and national interest should also be kept in mind.

With the GST in place the country can clock at least an additional one per cent in the national GDP, he said.
