Ramanlal Vora is set to be new Speaker of Gujarat Assembly as he is the sole candidate for the position.
Ahmedabad:
BJP legislator Ramanlal Vora is set to be the new Speaker of Gujarat Assembly as he is the sole candidate for the position, while there will be a contest for the post of deputy-speaker after Congress and the ruling party fielded their candidates.
Mr Vora on Saturday filed his form for the post before the secretary of the state Assembly.
Mr Vora, a dalit leader who was a minister in the earlier Anandiben Patel government, was not included in the Cabinet of new Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
His election to the post of Speaker is certain, when the monsoon session of the Assembly will meet on Monday, as the opposition Congress has not put up any candidate against him.
In the two-day session, GST bill will also be ratified.
However, for the post of deputy speaker both Congress and BJP have put up their candidates.
From BJP, the form was filled by Gandhinagar legislator Shambhuji Thakor, while Chandrika Bariya, a tribal legislator from Garbada (ST reserved seat), has filed her form from the Congress party.
The elections for the post of the Speaker and deputy-speaker have been necessitated as, both ex-Speaker Ganpat Vasava and ex-Deputy Speaker Atmaram Parmar were included in Mr Rupani's Cabinet.
This will be the first Assembly session after Mr Rupani took over as the Chief Minister of Gujarat replacing Anandiben Patel.
