Guwahati: BJP MLAs today staged a walkout from the state Assembly after they were not allowed to discuss an alleged attack by two Assam Congress leaders on police personnel who had gone to arrest a Bangladeshi national in Morigaon district.
BJP MLA Prashanta Phukan wanted to raise the issue as 'Point of Order' and sought a statement from the government, which was strongly opposed by ruling Congress members, leading to noisy scenes.
The opposition party had raised the incident yesterday, too, during the ongoing Monsoon Session but the Speaker denied permission and asked them to bring it through a "proper device".
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rockybul Hussain reiterated his statement that the issue should be raised through a "proper device".
As the government stuck to its stand, the BJP MLAs walked out of the House and said that being denied a discussion was "undemocratic".
On Monday, a group of people attacked a police party which had gone to arrest a person who was declared to be a Bangladeshi national by a Foreigners Tribunal.
The attack, which helped the illegal immigrant flee from his house, was allegedly led by two general secretaries of the Morigaon district Congress committee.
