The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have a new set of leaders, including a new party president, but the party's losing streak continues. It didn't win a single seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections. In fact, for 13 of the 36 seats at stake, it didn't have a candidate at all.
In Basti, not one person voted for the BJP. And in five seats, it got less than 30 votes.
Party spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar, suggests there's no problem. "The MLC elections are not a people's mandate," he said.
It's said that the road to power in Delhi passes through Lucknow. But the BJP has lost so much ground, that its new leadership has no corner from where it can launch a revival plan.
The 36 seats at stake are decided by members of local bodies.
In true BJP tradition, the loss has been followed by infighting instead of introspection. Many within the party blame Rajnath Singh, UP strongman and ex-party president.
