Lucknow: BJP today ridiculed BSP chief Mayawati for demanding a CBI probe into the Mathura clashes and at the same time casting aspersions on the working of the investigation agency.

"This is nothing but a dichotomy. On one hand she seeks CBI inquiry into Mathura violence and on the other she questions the working of the agency," BJP spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak said in Lucknow.

His comments came in the wake of the BSP chief expressing apprehension that the Centre might misuse CBI and other investigation agencies to gag opposition leaders from highlighting "failures" of the Modi government.

Ms Mayawati had yesterday cautioned that BJP will have to suffer political loss in the coming elections in Uttar Pradesh -- as in the case of Kerala and West Bengal -- if it tinkered with the functioning of CBI or misused it against her.

"If she thinks the Centre is misusing CBI, then why demand a CBI probe into the Mathura violence," Mr Pathak asked, adding that her remarks were "highly ironical".

Trashing Ms Mayawati's charge that BJP and SP had a tacit understanding on the issue of probe into the Mathura violence, he asked as to what role BSP played as the main opposition party in the state.
